Test Day Advice

Important Information for Test Centre Candidates
The details below apply only to candidates who take IELTS at an official test centre.
To help you perform at your best, we have prepared clear guidance so you know exactly what to expect on test day. Following these instructions will help ensure a smooth experience and allow you to focus on achieving your target IELTS score.
Preparing to Go to the Test Centre
Before your test day, double-check the start time of your IELTS exam and plan your journey carefully. It is strongly recommended that you do this at least one week in advance to avoid any last-minute issues.
Also, confirm the exact location of your test venue, as it may differ from the centre where you originally registered.
Arriving on Test Day
Please make sure you have read and understood the IELTS terms and conditions, which contain important test day information. These can be found in the Test Taker Information section of your application.
Late arrivals may not be permitted to sit the test.
All mobile phones and electronic devices must be switched off and stored outside the test room with your personal belongings.
The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections last approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes with no breaks.
Food and drinks are not allowed in the test room, except for water in a clear bottle. It is advisable to eat a proper meal before the test begins.
Identification Requirements
Your identity will be verified when you arrive at the test centre. The registration documents you received will specify which form of ID is required. Without the correct identification, you will not be allowed to take the test.
For security purposes:
A photograph will be taken before the test and printed on your Test Report Form (TRF).
In certain countries, a finger scan may also be required.
During the Test
Please follow all test room rules carefully:
For paper-based IELTS, you must use the black pen provided by the test centre. Personal stationery, including pencils, is not allowed.
If you need to leave your seat to use the restroom, raise your hand and wait for assistance without disturbing others.
If you have a question, signal the invigilator by raising your hand.
Before the Listening test begins, ensure you can hear the audio clearly. If not, inform the invigilator immediately.
After the Listening section, you will be given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. There is no extra time after the Reading section, so answers must be written on the answer sheet as you go.
After the Test Ends
Stay seated until the invigilator instructs you to leave the room.
If you feel that any issue affected your performance, report it to the invigilator as soon as possible.
Any formal complaints must be submitted promptly by completing the Complaint Form.
Test Day Advice
Listen carefully to all instructions and remember that the Writing tasks require you to meet specific word count requirements.
Some sections include suggested time limits — keep track of time to ensure all questions are answered.
Stay relaxed and take slow, deep breaths if you feel anxious during the test.
